Although travelling by plane is the main means of transport to the lodges, guests arriving with their own vehicle or private ground transport can easily access the Sabi Sand Reserve. The distance from Johannesburg is 450 kilometres and will take about 7 hours dependent on traffic and road works.

From Johannesburg, the majority of the route is on the N4. This is generally a comfortable and safe drive. There are three access gates at Sabi Sand; Shaws Gate, Newington Gate, and Gowrie Gate.

If guests are arriving via Skukuza Airport within the Kruger National Park, guests staying in the Sabi Sands are required to exit the park using the R536 at Paul Kruger Gate in order to enter either Shaws or Newington Gates to the Sabi Sands Reserve. There will be signs to both gates once travelling on the R536.

Guests arriving from Hoedspruit Airport will enter the most northerly gate, Gowrie Gate.

It is essential to be in touch with your travel consultant for directions to specific lodges. They can tell you the best routes, which airport guests should fly into,  and which is the most convenient gate to enter.  Kindly, note that the gate opening and closing times are subject to change.
