Project Description

Umkumbe Safari Lodge is ideally situated in the heart of the Sabi Sand Reserve. Located within the borders of Kruger National Park, Sabi Sand is considered by many to be South Africa’s premier reserve due to large concentrations of wildlife and, in particular, leopard. And because Umkumbe Lodge overlooks the Sand River, a plethora of wildlife is attracted to the area. Elephants, hippos, buffalo and antelope are often seen grazing on the riverbanks.

Guests rave about the personal, rustic and authentic African safari experience they enjoy at this family-friendly, owner-managed lodge.

You are invited into this very special world to make memories that will last a lifetime.

General game such as warthog, and a range of antelope and small mammals can come and go as they please. All providing entertaining game viewing!

  • A traditional boma

Creative Cuisine

Guests enjoy international favourites and local flavours at Umkumbe. Each day begins with brunch at 10:30am, followed by light lunch at 2pm and then dinner around 7pm. Delicious and hearty South African meals or “boerekos” are served in one of two dining areas – around a campfire in the boma, or another outdoor area under thatch. The bar is fully stocked and guests are encouraged to help themselves via an honesty bar service.

Activities

Animals roam freely throughout as there are no fences between Kruger National Park and Sabi Sand Game Reserve. During the dry season the vegetation is sparse and wildlife congregates around watering holes. During the wet season the vegetation is dense and wildlife is more dispersed.

Game drives at Umkumbe are coordinated by expert Rangers, who will ensure that your safari experience is truly memorable. Expect to see the “Big Five” and much more!

All game drives are safely conducted in open 4 x 4 Landrovers. Because the animals are generally habituated to the vehicle, they are used to it approaching them and know that no harm will be caused. Guests often get within five to 10 metres of large animals, while taking in epic panoramic views. Photographers and videographers will love this opportunity!

  • Morning and evening game drives
  • Sundowners in the bush
  • Bird watching
  • Optional morning bush walk after breakfast
  • Night game drives
